Kitty’s Little Flipped Town

 Hi, my dear fan-riends,

Today I want to tell you about our little flipped classroom adventure with Kitty the cat. For this assignment we had to design a flipped vocabulary lesson for the unit “My Town” and then write about it here. In a flipped classroom students first meet the new topic at home, usually with a video, and then come to class to use it in activities. This can be very useful in language lessons, because students can pause, rewind and listen again at their own speed. It also saves class time for games, speaking and pair work. Of course there is a dark side too. Some students may not watch the video at all, or they may not have a good internet connection, so the teacher has to think about these problems as well.

For this project Asude Başkaya, Serra Mirac Demirkol and I worked together. We chose the “My Town” unit for 5th graders and focused on places in town and simple directions. We created three short videos with a white cat called Kitty. At home, students watch Kitty, listen to the words and directions, and repeat them.

In class they use a worksheet and a foldable minibook that we designed. They follow Kitty’s route on a map, give directions to each other and write simple sentences about the places. We used Gemini to generate the visuals for Kitty and the town, and Canva to edit the videos and design the worksheet and minibook. These tools helped us create a colourful and consistent world for Kitty.
