House of Chores: Corpus-Based Teaching of Make vs Do
Hi, fan-riends! I am back after a month of agony and despair. Just kidding, it has been a hectic month for me. Yet, here I am.
In this post, I will introduce you the teaching material and lesson plan that we prepared. By saying we I mean my partners Asude BAŞKAYA and Serra Mirac DEMİRKOL. We designed our lesson plan and material for prep. class of a public highschool, 14-15 year-old teenagers. The focus of the lesson is house chores and daily routines and the grammar point is the difference between make and do collocations (e.g. do the dishes, make breakfast, do the laundry, make the bed).
The worksheet we prepared has 4 main tasks. In Task 1, students complete simple gap-fill sentences with make or do to activate their previous knowledge. In Task 2, students use Lextutor (online concordancer) to search phrases like " do the...", and "make the" to write what they found to the surroundings of the word bubbles in which it is written (make & do). Task 3 requires them to “find the rule” by using these collocations and answering short questions about what usually comes after make and do. Finally, in Task 4 they write a short paragraph about their own daily life, using both verbs at least twice, and then check their text with their peers and then with an AI tool (e.g. ChatGPT), to notice and correct their errors. We also included a reflection part to understand what they feel about the worksheet.
Though it is useful for students to see the language in context, it may have its own problems. For instance, using the concordancers and AI tools may be tough for the beginner level students. Also, they may not have the necessary materials to use the tools. That is why teachers should have a clear teaching of the concordancer and they should have an example prompt for the sake of avoiding misuse of Artificial Intelligence.
Here is our lesson plan:
